십자가의 도

고린도전서 1:18

 

1. 고린도의 동역자들

바울은 편지 서두에 자신의 이름과 함께 형제 소스데네의 이름을 언급합니다. 소스데네는 고린도에서 바울을 숨겨주고 대신 매를 맞아준 유대교 회당장입니다. 바울은 소스데네 외에도 브리스길라 아굴라, 아볼로 등의 귀한 동역자들의 도움을 받아 1년 6개월 동안 고린도에서 사역할 수 있었습니다.

 

2. 고린도교회의 분열

바울이 떠난 뒤 안타깝게도 고린도교회 안에는 많은 분쟁과 다툼이 일어났습니다. 교회는 예수 그리스도의 복음과 구원의 진리를 가지고 있지만, 한편으로는 쉽게 나뉘고 갈라지는 특성을 가지고 있습니다. 예수님도 이러한 우리의 연약함을 미리 아시고, 십자가를 지시기 전 모두가 하나 되기를 간절히 기도하셨습니다.

 

3. 십자가의 도로 하나되는 교회

바울은 고린도교회가 다시 하나되는데 필요한 것은 뛰어난 지식이나 언변이 아니라고 말합니다. 저들에게 필요한 것은 오직 ‘십자가의 도’라고 강조합니다. 십자가는 유대인들에게 거리끼는 것이고 이방인들에게 미련해 보이는 것이지만 모든 갈등과 다툼을 이기고 하나를 이루는 하나님의 지혜임을 우리는 기억해야 합니다.

 

 

 

 

 

The Message of the Cross

1. Co-workers in Corinth

In the introduction to his letter, Paul mentions the name of his brother Sosthenes along with his own. Sosthenes was a synagogue leader in Corinth who sheltered Paul and endured beatings on his behalf. With the valuable assistance of co-workers like Sosthenes, as well as Priscilla and Aquila, Paul was able to minister in Corinth for a year and six months.

 

2. Discord in the Corinthian Church

Unfortunately the Corinthian church experienced numerous conflicts and disputes after Paul's departure. Even the church possessed the gospel of Jesus Christ and the truth of salvation, it also exhibited a tendency to easily divide and splinter. Recognizing this human frailty, Jesus Himself prayed fervently for unity before He died on the cross.

 

3 The Church Unified by the Message of the Cross

Paul emphasizes that what the Corinthian church needs to become unified again is not exceptional knowledge or eloquence but solely "the way of the cross." Though the cross may appear foolish to Jews and a stumbling block to Gentiles, we must remember that it is God's wisdom, which overcomes all conflicts and divisions, bringing unity.
